gustavoadoltoaybar As the news of #tyrenichols death at the hands o

f police continues to spread, I realize that this June will make 10 years since I left a translation job, to become a police officer in the state of Kansas. That's me taking the oath. I graduated the academy in four months, and because I struggled to learn some key aspects of the job, I was let go two months after. It was challenging to wear that uniform and badge and try to be a positive change in the system.I don't know the type of cop I could've been, but I hope it would've been one that people would respect for his fairness and kindness, and that other people of color would trust. I have been working on sharing parts of that journey, and @soflopojo has published two of my pieces in their online February issue. One piece was written almost 9 years ago; the other is about 4 years old. I went to Miami Beach Senior High and Miami Dade (Community) College. My mother, sisters, and some very close friends still live there, so I'm happy to have my work represented by a hometown journal.
